1955–1975 Vietnam War

The Vietnam War was a complex and prolonged conflict involving guerrilla warfare, conventional battles, and foreign intervention. Battlefield studies in this category examine key engagements from the American phase of the conflict, with a focus on terrain analysis, troop movement, and the challenges of jungle warfare. These studies are built upon period maps, after-action reports, combat photographs, and personal exploration of the battlefields—revealing how terrain, logistics, and tactics defined the war’s outcomes.

📝🔒 Field Note: Battle of Long Tan, South Vietnam, 18 August 1966

August 2015, Long Tan Rubber Plantation, Baria-Vung Tau Province, Vietnam. I am standing at the Long Tan Cross memorial to the 18 Australian soldiers killed here during the Battle of Long Tan, 18 August 1966.

Across the Long Tan battlefield, there is very little apparent relief in the terrain. The ground is largely flat and agricultural, with sections planted in rubber trees at varying stages of growth or left fallow.

💡 Tactical Innovations: Lessons from the Russo-Ukrainian War

Modern warfare, as seen on the Eastern Front, is defined by fragile logistics, pervasive drone use, and small, decentralised teams operating with limited support, which forces junior leaders to make rapid decisions under extreme uncertainty. Success depends on cognitive skills over technology, including disciplined situational awareness, procedural identification, adaptive leadership, and the ability to operate independently without reliable resupply, evacuation, or higher command control.

21 November 1970

Operation KINGPIN, the Son Tay Raid, on the night of 20/21 November 1970, was a meticulously planned U.S. military operation to rescue American prisoners of war (POWs) from the Son Tay prison North Vietnam. It was one of the most audacious operations in military history. The operation involved a joint force of U.S. Army Special Forces and Air Force personnel. Despite the operation’s almost flawless execution, it failed to achieve its primary objective, as the POWs had been relocated to other sites.
