Easy Company, 506th PIR ‘Band of Brothers’ assault at the Crossroads
The Crossroads battle
September 2025, Randwijk, Netherlands. I am standing at the “Crossroads” made famous in Band of Brothers Episode 5: Crossroads. On 5 October 1944, a brief battle took place here, east of the village of Randwijk, in the area between the Rhine and the Waal known as “The Island.”
Following the failure of Operation MARKET GARDEN, Allied forces held the south bank of the Rhine, while German forces occupied the north bank. The 101st Airborne Division was deployed across this narrow strip of land, bounded by the Rhine to the north and the Waal to the south. Easy Company’s command post was located in a house in Randwijk.

Easy Company alerted
In the early hours of 5 October 1944, Easy Company was alerted to German forces that had crossed the Rhine to the east. Captain Richard Winters led elements of his 1st Platoon on a patrol eastward along the southern side of a dike running parallel to the river. After approximately 800 metres, the patrol crossed to the northern side of the dike.
Advancing along the northern slope, the patrol observed and heard a German machine gun engaging American positions further south. Winters moved forward with a small team and eliminated the gun. Pulling back to a drainage ditch roughly 200 metres from the German position, he assessed the situation. The German force was significantly larger. Remaining in place risked being fixed and overwhelmed.
Winters chose to attack.
