Breakout from Encirclement

Breakout operations occur when a surrounded force attempts to rupture enemy lines and escape destruction. A breakout is a high-risk operation that requires careful planning, deception, and specific force groupings into a rupture force, an exploitation force, flank and rear guards, and reserves. This tag highlights battles defined by improvisation, attrition, and high-risk manoeuvre under extreme pressure.

The Battle of Route Coloniale No. 4 (Cao Bang Ridge Disaster) was one of the worst military defeats in the history of colonial wars, with a French force of ~6,000 troops destroyed. The battle took place along a 137km section of RC4 between Lang Son in the south and Cao Bang in the north. The French attempted to evacuate the Cao Bang garrison with support from a relief column. Both forces were destroyed in the jungle-covered mountains around Dong Khé.

In June 1884, a French column under Lieutenant Colonel Alphonse Dugenne, comprised of about 465 French troops and 284 Tonkinese auxiliaries, with a supply column of local ‘coolies’ and baggage mules, was attacked by a much larger Chinese regular force near Bắc Lệ, on the road from Phu-Lang-Thuong to Lang Son. ⚔️ Siege of Alesia,
Caesar’s Gallic Wars,
~September 52 BC

The siege of Alesia in 52 BC was the culmination of Julius Caesar’s conquest of Gaul and his battle against the Gallic leader Vercingetorix. Caesar wrote about it in his book ‘Battles for Gaul’ as part of his self-promotion effort.
Vercingetorix and Alesia are the basis for René Goscinny’s ‘Asterix and Obelisk’ cartoons. The siege of Alesia also features in the opening episode of HBO’s series ‘Rome’ when Legionary Titus Pullo breaks ranks to fight the Gauls, and Centurion Lucius Verenus has to go after him. Vercingetorix is taken prisoner and imprisoned by Caesar – all set at Alesia. Titus Pullo and Lucius Verenus were real Roman soldiers – Caesar wrote specifically about them and their exemplary courage.

In central Finland, the Russian 163rd Rifle Division and an independent tank brigade crossed the border at Juntusranta, and the 44th (Ukrainian) Rifle Division crossed at Raate. Both forces converged on Suomussalmi as their immediate objective. Their ultimate aim was to seize Oulu, and cut Finland in two.

Sher Pur 1879

⚔️ Battle of Kabul, Afghanistan,
11-24 December 1879

The Second Anglo-Afghan War of 1878-1880, was part of the ‘Great Game’ between Great Britain and Russia as both sought greater influence and to undermine the other in Central and South Asia. In 1878, Russia sent a diplomatic mission to the court of Sher Ali Khan, the Amir of Afghanistan. The British mission was refused entry into Afghanistan. Fearing that the Russians had gained an advantage, the British used this as justification to invade Afghanistan, ostensibly to secure India’s northwest frontier.
